Who is FINA?

The ‘Fédération Internationale de Natation’ (FINA; International Swimming Federation) was established almost 100 years ago. It was founded in London in 1908 by eight national federations: Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Hungary and Sweden. Its objectives were to establish unified rules for international competitions; carry out controls over world records and manage swimming competition at the Olympic Games.
Today, almost 100 years later and currently under the presidency of Mustapha Larfaoui, FINA has its headquarters in Lausanne (Switzerland) and has 191 member federations. Its objectives have been adapted to modern times and now emphasise:

FINA has continued to introduce new events into the world of swimming pools, such as for example, World Cups (1979), World Masters Championships (1986), Swimming World Short Course (25m) Championships (every two years since 1993), the Diving Grand Prix (1995) and the Super Finals of the Diving Grand Prix (1998), Open Water World Championships (2000), World League of Men’s (2002) and Women’s (2004) Water polo.
Aquatic sports have been gaining increased popularity and consequently greater television coverage. What makes FINA so unique?

It is the only international federation for aquatic sports. Its members are comprised of national swimming federations.
