Distinguished Guests visit the Skypool at the Melbourne World Championships
The competition pool installed by AstralPool for the Melbourne World Swimming Championships
received a visit from top local authorities and businesses. On 6 March, the Minister of Sports from
the State of Victoria, James Merlino, accompanied by the 2007 World Swimming Championships Chairman
Tony Beddison, toured the Skypool to find out about the innovative technology first hand. More
than a hundred representatives from the most important Australian businesses in the aquatic
industry were also invited to walk around the facilities.
The Director of AstralPool Hurlcon Australia, Peter Wallace, acted as host and, along with the
AstralPool technicians, explained the innovative characteristics of the floating pool, with its 3
metre galvanized steel panels and its special assembly that doesn’t require a single screw in the
famous floor of the Rod Laver stadium in Melbourne, to the tour guests.
Other Exceptional Visitors include the Ambassador and Consul General of
Spain
.
A few days before, the Skypool also aroused the interest of other distinguished guests. The
Ambassador of Spain in Australia, the Honourable Mr. Antonio Cosano and the Consul General of
Spain, the Honourable Mr. Miguel Utray, toured the assembly work of the main pool for the Swimming
Championships. The Ambassador as well as the Consul were impressed by the technology developed by
AstralPool: “the ability to assemble temporary pools like this one in a stadium where just a few
weeks before we witnessed the finals of the Australian Tennis Open is extraordinary without a
doubt, and it’s going to give outstanding added value to the show at these Championships”.
Spain will be represented in swimming, open water, men and womens’ water polo, diving and
synchronized swimming. The Spanish delegation has already arrived in Melbourne. “It is without a
doubt very satisfying that Spain, apart from its participation in the sporting events, brings its
experience and ingenuity to these World Championships with the installation of pools and water
purification. Swimming is one of the most important sports in Australia and therefore the fact that
a Spanish company won a contract of this size demonstrates that our country and AstralPool in
particular, are leading the way world-wide in this type of technology," stated the
Ambassador.
