After the world Swimming Championships of Barcelona (Spain) in 2003, and the world Swimming Championships in 25 metres held in Shanghai (China) in 2006, the International
Federation of Swimming (FINA) has entrusted AstralPool - in the role of official sponsor and partner - to install the main pool of the XII FINA world Championship that will be held in Melbourne (Australia), from the 17th of March to the 1st of April, 2007.

Three challenges for AstralPool
The Local organizing Committee (LoC) wanted to install a temporary, floating pool, without having to modify the grounds of the rod Laver Stadium. Moreover, it aimed to reinstall the pool permanently in another location once the championship was over. Skypool technology has responded to this need.
Skypool will also allow two competitions, swimming and synchronized swimming, to be held in the same pool. This request means doing something that has never been done before in a championship: The construction of a floating Skypool, 3m deep, within a deadline of three weeks!
Special needs of a pool 3m deep
A 3m pool is not just a pool that is deeper than a 2m one. There is a big difference in the pool’s structure which is difficult to appreciate from the outside: the panels’ resistance to the water pressure must be increased exponentially. A 2m pool must support a water pressure of approximately 2,000 kg per meter; in a 3m pool, the pressure that the structure must support is not 3,000 kg, but almost 4,500 kg per meter. And a diving pool (5m deep) must have a resistance of 12,500 kg per meter.
Skypool Technology
“Skypool” technology uses independent panels of hot-dipped galvanized steel. This technology, certified and totally developed by the Spanish company, allows the pool to be secured, without the use of nails or screws, to the stadium floor. The competition pool will measure 50x25x3 meters and it will have capacity for 3,750m3 of water. over 200 galvanized steel panels will be used for its assembly.
