Fluidra and AstralPool work with the Children and Youth Foundation of Catalonia "l'Esplai" to promote the sustainable use of water in its facilities

Barcelona 24 July 2008 – Fluidra, through its holding AstralPool, and the Fundació Catalana de l'Esplai (Children and Youth Foundation of Catalonia) have signed a collaboration agreement whereby the multinational will advise and support the Foundation in its endeavours to achieve maximum sustainability in its use of water in all of its facilities and in the various projects and activities it carries out related to swimming pools, irrigation and water treatment.

The collaboration between the two organisations will initially last for four years. The first outcome of this agreement is the installation by AstralPool (a holding of the Fluidra Group) of two swimming pools based on Skypool technology at the Centre Esplai, a unique building belonging to the Foundation in the Sant Cosme neighbourhood of El Prat de Llobregat (Barcelona, Spain).

The main characteristic of the 4 x 8 m and 20 x 8 m pools is the use of state-of-the-art technology and equipment based on the principles of energy and water saving and easy access. Some examples are: an automatic or manual cover to avoid heat loss when the pool is not used, solar panels with a surface of 156m2 to supply hot water; condensation water resource management through dehumidifiers that allow to reuse around 750l/day of distilled water, and equipment to maintain and disinfect water via ultraviolet light (UV) allowing to reduce chlorine consumption. Both pools feature 20 skylights and 25 solar pipes allowing for natural lighting with its corresponding important energy saving.

The pools will be a work in progress, which will allow AstralPool to test its latest technological advances resulting from its R&D activities and to measure consume details and other interesting parameters. The young people who go to the Centre Esplai will be able to enjoy playing and swimming in sustainable swimming pools that are environmentally friendly.

About the Children and Youth Foundation of Catalonia

The Children and Youth Foundation of Catalonia is a non-profit initiative that was set up to promote the education of children, teenagers and young adults through leisure. The Foundation currently has around 100 leisure centres, which run activities that reach over 50,000 children and young people every year.

The Foundation also proposes to work towards the development of community life, both by running and providing the facilities for social events. It will thus strengthen democratic practices and contribute to improving the lives of the population and society in general.

This task is possible thanks to the work of over 1,400 monitors, most of whom work on a voluntary basis, and to the support of families, schools, local authorities, partners and collaborators.
